Seismic survey season starts in Barents

6,000 kilometers of seismic data will be acquired in the Norwegian sector over the next two months.

Location

The vessel M/V Artemis Atlantic starts the acquisition on Wednesday this week in the southern part of the Barents Sea, the Norwegian Petroleum Directorate reports. The vessel will sail the area and acquire 2D seismic data in hope to find oil and gas.

This is the second season in a row seismic survey takes place after Norway and Russia in 2010 agreed on the maritime delimitation for the Barents Sea.

The results from the acquisition will be part of the fact basis when the Norwegian Parliament later will determines whether to open these areas for petroleum activity.

“We will take a more detailed approach, and acquire data also at prospect level,” says Lars Jensen, project manager for this summer’s seismic acquisition.

In total, the Norwegian Petroleum Directorate will acquire 30,000 kilometers of seismic in the Barents Sea and the northern parts of the Norwegian Sea this summer.
