Just one week after its ignition, the gas flame over the Melkøya gas plant on the coast of the Barents Sea is speading black soot over the nearby town of Hammerfest. Operator Statoil should have informed the local population about the black rain, environmental organisation Bellona maintains.

-It is unacceptable that people in Hammerfest have to breathe the soot from Statoil’s plant at Melkøya, says Marius Holm from Bellona. He is not sure whether the dust could be harmful to humans.

According to Statoil, the reason for the black soot is too low temperatures in parts of the processing facilities.

The Melkøya LNG plant, Europe's first export facility for liquefied natural gas (LNG), will be in full operation this fall. The plant last week received the first gas from the “Snøhvit” field in the Barents Sea.

The Snohvit field has 193 billion cubic metres of natural gas reserves and is the first hydrocarbon field in operation in the Barents Sea.
