Sami skeletons coming home

University Oslo

Since 1911 the skeletons of Sami ancestors have been stored at the University in Oslo for the cause of science. Now the Sami skeletons will be put to rest in their original graves in northern Norway.

Location

The remains of 94 people of the East Sami population, who have their origin in Eastern Finnmark and Northern Finland, were in 1911 removed from their graves. The Skeletons were transported to Oslo to be used on research, a research which today would be considered racist. The identity of each skeleton is not known.

Relatives have several times tried to bring the remains back to their rightful grave in the small village of Neiden, but without success. The main reason has been lack of money to perform the transportation from Oslo to Neiden. On next years Government Budget there is finally put aside money to move the skeletons from halls of the University to the old cemetery in Neiden, according to Norwegian Newspaper Aftenposten.

It is yet not decided how the remains will be transported from Oslo to Neiden and how they will be put to rest. A committee is already appointed to find a proper and respectful way to do this.
