The two Russian Mir mini-submarines have surfaced after more than an eight-hour dive to the North Pole seabed. -The goal of this expedition is not to stake Russia's claim, but to prove that our shelf spreads to the North Pole, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov says.
According to the Vesti-24 TV channel, the North Pole mission was successfully executed. The two submersibles Mir-1 and Mir-2 dived 4,200 meters and planted a titanium Russian flag on the North Pole seabed.

Russian Minister of Foreign Affairs Sergey Lavrov says he hopes the expedition will "allow us to acquire additional scientific proof" to support the country’s claim for the 1,2 million square km of the Arctic.

Boris Gryzlov, speaker of the upper house of Russia's parliament, said the dive marked a new stage in exploring Russia's polar resources, RIA Novosti reports.
