The Pomor community in Arkhangelsk continues its fight for recognition as indigenous people. In its first national Pomor congress recently, the Pomor community decided to step up pressure on federal authorities.
The representatives agreed about a letter demanding the rapid inclusion of the Pomors in the federal list of small indigenous peoples in Russia.
The people identifying themselves as part of a Pomor nationality live along the White Sea, most of them in Arkhangelsk Oblast. In the 2002 census in Russia, the Pomors were allowed to register as a separate group. However federal authorities have been more reluctant to give the Pomors recognition as an indigenous group, which will entitled them to several rights over natural resources in the region.
In the Russian part of the Barents Region, only three groups have official status as indigenous peoples, the Nenets, the Vesp and the Sàmi.
