Northwest Russia lags behind in Internet use

The study, which was presented by the Yandex company in late December, shows huge differences in Internet use between the two main cities, Moscow and Sankt Petersburg and the rest of the country. Similarly big is the difference between the regional centres and the regional countryside.
Thus, six of the total 29 million Russian Internet users come from Moscow or Sankt Petersburg. Only 20 percent of the Internet domenes registered in the country have been registered outside the two main cities. The level of Internet use in the regions is 2,5 times lower that in Moscow or Sankt Petersburg, the study shows.
In Russia, a total of one million domenes have been registered, of which about 800,000 are active. The number of new Russian Internet sites in 2007 increased with 66 percent. In the regions, the growth in the number of sites was somewhat lower – 57 percent.
In cities with populations higher than 100,000, the level of Internet use is 40 percent.
While Northwest Russia, except the city of Sankt Petersburg, is lagging behind with regard to the Internet user level, the region still has eight of the 50 best Russian Internet-developed cities. Two Northwest Russian cities are among the top 20 – among which is the city of Petrozavodsk in the Republic of Karelia.
