No NATO rapid reaction force along Russian border

The North Atlantic Treaty Organisation

NATO has no plans to establish a rapid reaction force close to the Russian border, the alliance’s spokeswoman Carmen Romero confirms.

Location

According to Russian news agency RIA Novosti, the alliance discussed the establishment of the force – a proposal of US President George Bush – in its London meeting last week. The newspaper Los Angeles Times earlier sparked speculations about the alliance’s intention to establish such a force in a recent article. Several of Russia’s western neighbours have expressed fear over a more aggressive Russian policy against neighbouring states, following the recent conflict in Georgia. NATO borders Russia in the Baltics, the Black Sea, and the Barents Sea.
