New leader of Northwest Russia

Ilya Klebanov will leave his post as leader of the Northwest Russian Federal District, Russian media reports. He might be replaced by former minister of communication Leonid Reiman.

Presidential aide to Northwest Russia Ilya Klebanov will in the near future leave his post, news agency Regnum reports. The high-ranking official leaves his post because of another job offer, sources in the federal government say.

According to Regnum, former minister of communications Leonid Reiman is likely to become the new district leader.

The resignation is not yet confirmed by the district administration.

Ilya Klebanov has headed the Northwest Russian Federal District since 2003. Before that, he held several top government jobs both in the Putin and Yeltsin periods.

The Northwestern Federal District is one of seven Russian federal districts, functioning as the top administrative structures of the Presidential administration in the regions. The districts were established after Vladimir Putin became president in 2000 in his bid to strengthen Moscow’s control over the regions.

The Northwest Russian Federal District is headed from Sankt Petersburg.
