President Dmitri Medvedev on Sunday appointed Andrei Nelidov as new leader in the Republic of Karelia.

Andrei Nelidov has been acting head of Karelia since former governor Sergey Katanandov resigned on June 30th this year. Katanandov said he left office because of unspecified personal reasons.

The new governor of Karelia is 53 years old, and has earlier been Karelia’s representative in the Federation Council.

The appointment of Andrei Nelidov is expected to be confirmed later this week by Karelia’s local legislatures, reports The Moscow Times.

There are no reasons to believe that the local legislatures in Karelia will disapprove Nelidov. He was one of the candidates nominated by United Russia for the post, and United Russia dominates the local legislature in Karelia.
