The development of the Shtokman field in the Barents Sea triggers enormous optimism among business leaders in the Norwegian border town Kirkenes. Trade, new business projects and development of new infrastructure will florish across the Norwegian-Russian border with rapid economic development.

The Kirkenes-based Kimek shipyard has cooperated with Russian partners since the early 1990s.

- Kirkenes will be the major growth region in Europe, says Greger Mannsverk, director of Kimek in an interview with Norwegian Business daily Dagens Næringsliv after yesterday’s decision to include StatoilHydro as partner in the Shtokman development.

Kirkenes is located some few kilometres from the Russian border. It has good developed ice-free harbours, long-time experience in trading with Russia, and the town’s population has the highest percentage of native Russians living in Norway.
