New mining complex strengthens Norilsk Nickel in Murmansk Oblast
The mine complex was officially opened by Murmansk Governor Yuri Yevdokimov on 14 May. The governor, who flew in to the local mining town of Zapolyarny with helicopter, met with Norilsk Nickel General Director Denis Morozov, TV21 reports. The mining complex is the second operating on the “Severny Globokii” mine. The first complex was opened in 2004.
The “Severny Globokii” mine is to replace the local “Tsentralny” open pit, which is expected to run out of ore in 2009.
The underground “Severny Globokii” mine, which is located outside the town of Zapolyarny, will according to Mineral.ru, have resources for extraction till year 2023. Extraction will be increased to six million ton per year by 2010. In the first year of operation, a total of 194,000 tons of ore was extracted, Metalinfo.ru reports.
The Kolskaya GMK is a regional subsidiary of Norilsk Nickel, and operated mining facilities in the towns of Zapolyarny/Nikel and Monchegorsk.
