Inspectors from the Russian Technical Control Authority (Rostekhnadzor) confirm that mining and metallurgy major Norilsk Nickel will be forced to pay more for its extensive pollution. The inspections came after local inhabitants complained to the authorities about the company’s high level of emissions.
Head of the Siberian unit of the Rostekhnadzor, Mr. Leonid Baklitskii, this week said that his inspectors have concluded that Norilsk Nickel will have to pay more for its industrial discharges to nature.

The environmental fines are likely to apply both for the company’s plants in Siberia and in the Kola Peninsula

-The company today actually understands that the level of harmful emissions exceeds what has previously been reported. Therefore we have a re-calculation going on, Mr. Baklitskii says. He adds that Rostekhnadzor and Norilsk Nickel already this week will sign a protocol on interaction within industrial safety and protection of the environment.

Norilsk Nickel itself argues that it is in the process of improving management of its mining activities, as well as industrial safety and environmental protection, Newsru.com reports.
