Arrests follow opening of Andropov statue
10 people were detained by police when they refused to remove their protest posters during the opening ceremony of a new statue commemorating general secretary of the Communist Party and head of the KGB Yuri Andropov. -This statue is an insult to all the people who fell victims to the KGB and NKVD, says Aleksey Volgin, one of the protesters. Vyacheslav Ushakov, deputy head of the FSB, the successor organisation of the KGB, in his opening speech expressed gratitute to head of the republic, Sergey Katanadov, who had 'bravely decided to erect the statue'.
