Historic sub ready for scrapping
The Russian nuclear submarine B-524 (type Victor-III) lies ready for decommissioning and dismantling in the Zvezdochka construction plant in Severodvinsk, Arkhangelsk Oblast. The sub was the first ever to cross the straits of Frans Josef Land in submerged position.
The submarine, which is also named the “Zapadnaya Litsa”, has served in the Northern Fleet. The dismantling of the vessel is financed by Canadian authorities under the Global Partnership agreement on nuclear security.
The B-524 became historic when it in 1985 crossed the straits of the Frans Josef Land under the ice in submerged position.
