Gazprom says Arctic projects will not harm environment

All necessary measures on the prevention of pollution from the Prirazlomnoe oil field in the Barents Sea, the Bovanenkovo gas field in the Yamal Peninsula and the Nord Stream pipeline project in the Baltic Sea will be taken, the Gazprom management said in a meeting yesterday.

In a meeting in the company’s Coordination Committee on Environmental Issues, Deputy Chairman of the Company’s Management Committee Aleksandr Ananenkov discussed the projects with involved company subsidiaries.

The committee members confirmed that special early warning monitoring system on oil spills will be installed in the Barents Sea both in open sea, on the ice, under the ice and along the coast.

All the necessary measures will be taken to protect the environment, to prevent and mitigate the possible impact on the ecosystem during the construction and operation works in the frames of the projects implementation”, a press release from the company reads.

In the Bovanenkovo project, the company will also prepare for the unobstructed migration of reindeer herds across pipeline with the help of special passages facilities

The company also says that a minimum of 95 percent all gas from the Bovenenkovo and Prirazlomnoe fields will be exploited.

Present in the meeting were representatives of subsidiary companies “Gazprom Dubycha Nadym”, “Sevmorneftegaz”, “VNIPGgazdobycha”, “Peter gaz” and “Nord Stream”.

The Bovanenkovo project in Yamal is currently under development and is to be in production in 2011. Also the offshore Prirazlomnoe oil field and the Nord Stream pipline is projected to be in production in 2011.
