Environmentalists arrested in Shtokman protest

A group of 14 Norwegian and Finnish environmentalists were today arrested along with several Russian colleagues when protesting against the laying of the Shtokman gas pipeline through the Khibiny mountains in the Kola Peninsula.

Location

The environmentalists representing the Norwegian Nature and Youth, the Finnish Nature League and their Russian sister organisation Priroda i Molodezh were detained in the town of Apatity when they protested against the project. The protest had been approved by local authorities, sobkorr.ru reports.

Gazprom intends to lay its Shtokman pipeline through the picturesque and environmentally vulnerable Khibiny mountains. The environmentalists from the Nature and Youth organisation demand however that the Khibiny remain untouched by the oil industry and that a national park is established in the area.

The huge Shtokman field in the Barents Sea will be connected with a pipeline running across the Kola Peninsula to the Baltic Sea. The environmentalists demand that the pipeline is not built across the mountains but rather further west along the Imandra lake.

The protest against the Shtokman pipeline was held as part of an ongoing environmental camp with representatives of the three organisations.
