Swedish authorities want to reduce the population of brown bears in the country. The population has not been so big for a very long time and now counts around 3000.
90 of the bears will be killed in Sweden’s northernmost county of Norrbotten, Norrländske Socialdemokraten writes. The bear hunting season lasts until October 15.
Brown bears are a large threat to the reindeer husbandry in Northern Sweden. The brown bear predation is most apparent during calving season after being in hibernated for several months during winter.
Figures from Swedish University of Agricultural Science indicate that 40 000-45 000 reindeer are killed by predators annually in Sweden. This represents about 55 million SEK (€ 5.17 million) in losses for reindeer herders, without taking into account the breeding value and value added meat lost.
