Norwegian and Finnish partners are initiating a preparatory study on the possibilities for a rail connection between Kirkenes and Rovaniemi.

Location

The study will identify business and employment opportunities and environmental benefits that a train connection between the two important Arctic towns can give, a press release from Kirkenes Business Center reads.

The study will primarily focus on possibilities within mining, forestry, tourism and the development of the oil and gas industry in the area.

The Preparatory study will also investigate what impact this rail connection will have on a possible Kirkenes-Nikel rail connection.

The study has a 20.000 EUR price tag and is financed by the Finnish Ministry of Employment and the Economy, the Finnish Northern Lapland Regional Council and the Norwegian Kirkenes Business Center.
